We produce world class global brands; Carlsberg, Coca-Cola, Fanta, Sprite and the iconic Malawi Gin. We are the leading producer and distributor of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages in Malawi.
Castel Malawi’s soft drinks business was established in 1955, when the first Coca-Cola products were produced in Malawi under the company name Nyasaland Bottling Company. After Malawi’s independence in 1964, the company name changed to National Bottling Company and continued to produce and distribute sparkling beverages. The name National Bottling Company was later changed name to Southern Bottlers Limited. Southern Bottlers Limited is the only Coca-Cola franchisee in Malawi.
The distillery was officially opened in 1967, operating as Malawi Distilleries Limited. It is this side of the business that produces world class spirits such as Malawi Gin, Premier Brandy and Powers No1.
Officially opened on 14th December 1968, Castel Malawi Brewery Limited (CMBL) was the first Carlsberg brewery outside Denmark. It is located in the heavy industrial area of Makata in Blantyre and is the only state-of-the-art brewing and beer packaging facility in Malawi. This brewery is capable of producing 380,000 hl of beer per year.
In 2003, through a share swap arrangement, the Bottling and Brewing Group Limited (BBGL) was formed as the holding company under which Southern Bottlers Limited and Castel Malawi Brewery Limited would operate. Later in 2006, Malawi Distilleries Limited was acquired from Press Corporation Limited and became a third subsidiary of the group.
In 2011, the corporate brand name of Castel Malawi was officially adopted. In August 2016, Carlsberg A/S sold ownership of Castel Malawi to the French private company, Groupe Castel. Since then, Castel Malawi is under the ownership of by the Groupe Castel, which was founded in 1949, by Pierre Castel. The Groupe Castel is the number 1 producer of wine in Europe. It is also the number 2 producer of beer and soft drinks in Africa, with 120 soft drinks plants, 85 breweries and a presence in over 20 countries on the continent.
